Athlete diary: Wruck now preparing for Commonwealth Games

Reflecting on his time at the 13th IAAF world junior championships today is Julian Wruck.

The bronze medallist in the men’s discus throw at the worldwide meet, Julian has now shifted his attention to being in the best form he can be for the XIX Commonwealth Games in October.

ENJOY!

Entry 13: Julian Wruck

The world junior championships were a very fun experience for me and although I did not throw very well, I had a great time in Canada. I made some really good friends on the team that I’m sure will last a long time, many of them with huge potentials and big futures.

It’s interesting to see how vastly different backgrounds and personalities can produce motivation and success in their own unique ways. While being a diverse group of individuals each with different talents, maturity levels and senses of humour, the Australian team managed to get along seamlessly as if we were family.

Aside from competing and training, most of my time at the world juniors was spent joking around with people from the Australian team or playing ping pong in the building’s common room. Although not very eventful it was great fun, particularly watching the athletics with both Australian and foreign friends. Watching people compete that you spend quality time with away from the track is a very rare and special experience that I cannot get enough of. Your emotions are amplified to the point where you almost feel as though you are competing yourself.

After the competition I took about one and a half weeks off and spent some with my family. I now find myself with 48 days to get into the best throwing shape of my life before I compete at the Commonwealth Games.

In the next eight weeks I plan to reach a level where if I throw well at the Games then I will be in medal contention. This is the most exciting time of my life, keeping the biggest competition of my athletics career at the back of my head whilst training certainly keeps me hungry. I believe that I can fit in about 1600-1800 throws between now and then with good planning and recovery, along with over 6000 total discus movements which will definitely help me get used to some recent large technical changes I've made in my throw. By the time I compete, I want the throwing movement to feel completely natural to me, so I barely even have to think about it. Only then will I be confident in my abilities.

I find myself losing sleep just thinking about the Commonwealth Games most nights, going through all of the possible results that could perpetuate from my training. I can’t tell you what my result is going to be but I can tell you that I will give it one hell of a shot.
