Fifty to front Oceania challenge

Fifty athletes have today been named to the Australian team for next month’s IAAF Oceania Championships in Cairns in the all-important lead-up to the XIX Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India.

The 50-strong Australian team comprises 13 members of the Commonwealth Games team, who will use the September 23-25 meet as the platform for their New Delhi campaign, and a host of regional athletes set to take it right up to the best athletes of the Oceania region.

Spearheading the Australian campaign in Cairns will be Jeremy Roff (800m, 1500m), Jeff Hunt (5000m), Scott Martin (shot put, discus throw), Dale Stevenson (shot put), Simon Wardhaugh (hammer throw), Tim Driesen (hammer throw), Pirrenee Steinert (400m), Hayley Butler (100m hurdles), Ellen Pettitt (high jump), Joanne Mirtschin (shot put), Karyne Di Marco (hammer throw), Bronwyn Eagles (hammer throw) and Gabrielle Neighbour (hammer throw), who will don the green and gold in New Delhi in October.

Thirteen athletes selected to the team will contest the Under 20 Oceania Championships, to be run in conjunction with the open-age program.

The three-day meet will also feature four invitation events for athletes with a disability – the men’s and women’s secured shot put and men’s and women’s 100m –  and provide valuable competition opportunities to Australia’s top athletes with a disability in the countdown to New Delhi.

Headlining the AWD action in Cairns will be New Delhi ticket-holders Gabriel Cole, Heath Francis and Simon Patmore in the men’s 100m, Jodi Elkington in the women’s 100m, Damien Bowen and Hamish MacDonald in the men’s secured shot put and Louise Ellery and Brydee Moore in the women’s secured shot put.

Started in 1990 and held every two years, the Oceania meet is the area championships for the 22 IAAF member federations of the Oceania region.
