The road to Doha 2015 makes an important turn today, with Athletics Australia publishing the Selection Policy for the IPC Athletics World Championships to be held in the middle-eastern metropolis on 22-31 October 2015.
Setting out the basis on which Athletics Australia Selectors will determine the Australian Flame team for what will be the seventh edition of the biennial event, the Policy has been designed to select the strongest possible green and gold contingent within the allocated quota of team spots offered to Athletics Australia by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).
“Doha 2015 is a crucial milestone in the preparation of our team for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games,” Andrew Faichney, the Athletics Australia Paralympic Preparation Program Manager, said.
“The event occurs less than a year out from the Opening Ceremony and provides a strong indicator of how our biggest rivals are tracking ahead of competition on the biggest stage. And perhaps even more importantly, it is likely that the event will provide our athletes with the chance to earn guaranteed quota spots for the Paralympics.”
In addition to the Selection Policy, Athletics Australia has also confirmed the draft list of IPC sanctioned events for the upcoming domestic season. It is at these events that athletes can officially achieve the required qualification standard to be considered for selection to the team bound for Doha.
Athletes and coaches are strongly advised to download and read both documents to ensure they are very aware of the aims of the Selection Policy, the appropriate selection criteria and eligibility requirements, as well as where and when they should compete.
If you have any questions about the contents of the Selection Policy after this, please contact Athletics Australia’s Para-Athletics High Performance Department on (03) 8646 4550.
We wish athletes and coaches the best of luck in their push for selection, and look forward to sharing the Road to Rio with you all.
