Summer Universiade calling for 30 emerging Australians

Australia’s best emerging athletes will have the opportunity to gain valuable international experience at the 26th Summer Universiade (World University Games) later this year, with an initial team of 30 selected to compete in Shenzhen (CHN) from August 11 – 23, 2011.

Boasting four national champions, five Australian Flame and four athletes selected to compete at the IAAF world championships in Daegu (KOR), the Australian athletics team bound for the ‘Universiade’ will join an Australian team of over 230 to compete against over 8000 athletes from around the world across 24 sports.

One of the largest sporting events in the world, the World University Games have launched the careers of a bounty of track and field stars including Shirley Strickland (100m, 80m hurdles), Ralph Doubell (800m), Alison Inverarity (high jump), Emma George (pole vault) and Kylie Wheeler (heptathlon).

At the 2009 instalment of the Games in Belgrade (SER), the Australian athletics team won six medals, with Kaila McKnight the women’s 1500m silver medallist and Madeleine Pape (800m), Dani Samuels (discus throw), Tristan Thomas (400mH), Sean Wroe (400m) and the men’s 4x400m relay team all crowned world university champions.

The Summer Universiade is held every two years under the banner of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Athletics (track and field) has been a fixture of the competition schedule since the Games began in Turin (ITA) in 1959.
