Dent takes third Bolt

ACT athlete Martin Dent has won the Asics Noosa 5km Bolt in a close finish with World Cross Country Championships counterpart Collis Birmingham.

The quinella mirrored the result seen at the recent Skilled Burnie Ten event, with Dent (14:08) and Birmingham (14:10) having both enjoyed solid winter competitions on the road.

They were neck and neck for all of Saturday afternoon’s race; Dent’s final lap of 3:17 committing the two-second buffer on Birmingham.

The win was extra special for the 28 year-old, his third consecutive triumph in the Bolt, and he believes his experience in the 3000m steeplechase track event has held him in good stead.

“With the steeplechase style, coming out of the bends really suits me and you don't get punished too much being at the front,” he told AAP.

Victoria’s Mark Tucker was third in 14:14 with Michael Shelley taking fourth place in 14:17. Another steeplechase athlete, Peter Nowill, was a little way back in fifth - finishing in 14:45.

Nick Bromley, the national 800m champion, made a significant graduation to the longer distance and finished in seventh place in 15:02.

The women’s race was won by Sydney’s Lara Tamsett in 16:47 with Queenslander Jessica Gilfillan second in 17:12.

Tamsett appeared in absolute control from the third lap and turned in an impressive sub-4:00 minute effort to charge home.

The race had just 13 finishers with experienced pair Suzy Walsham and Lisa Corrigan late withdrawals.

Tamsett has had a solid year with World Cross Country representation and a stunning win in the junior division of the World Mountain Running Trophy in Switzerland.

“I felt really comfortable in the first half of the race and that's always a good sign with me,” she said to AAP. “If I feel relaxed it's a good omen.

“I left it to the last lap and a half to make a surge and tried to pick up the pace a bit.

“I got a good gap and held on and it was good to do the last lap knowing I had it in the bag.”
