Australia third as Greatest Race closes

The final event of the 2007-08 Greatest Race on Earth was held on Sunday with the running of the Hong Kong Marathon.

Trent Harlow ran in the men’s event and finished in 2:22.26, good enough for 11th overall and first in the Europe and Oceania division of the Greatest Race.

This result enabled Australia to claim third place overall in the Europe and Oceania division behind the teams from Russia and Denmark following earlier runs from Chris Hills (Nairobi), Jeremey Horne (Singapore) and Todd Ingraham (Mumbai).

June Petrie completed the marathon distance in a time of 3:00.53 to place 22nd in the women’s race and third in the Europe and Oceania division.

Like the men, this result was good enough to place the women third overall in the Europe and Oceania division behind the teams from Finland and Great Britain after earlier runs from Kate Seibold-Crosbie (Nairobi), Tina Major (Singapore) and Helen Stanton (Mumbai).

Japan’s Koichiro Fukuoka, in his debut at this distance, won the Hong Kong Marathon in a time of 2:18.10.

Kim Kum Ok of North Korea won the women’s race in a time of 2:36.43 after she crossed the line hand in hand with Jong Yong Ok, also of North Korea.

The 2008 Hong Kong Marathon saw 41,000 runners take to the streets for the Harbour Race in comfortable 19 degree temperatures.
