Athletics Australia Secures Funding Boost to Champion Inclusion and Participation Growth

Home | news | Athletics Australia Secures Funding Boost to Champion Inclusion and Participation Growth

Australian athletics has achieved another significant milestone, securing more than $2 million in Australian Government funding to fuel further growth and help the make the sport truly accessible for all – a key component of Athletics Australia’s strategy to grow the sport at all levels.

Coming off the back of record membership and participation levels, Athletics Australia has secured funding through three Government grants and targeted investments that will collectively support a range of initiatives aimed at breaking down barriers to participation and promoting the physical, social and mental health benefits of athletics.

Over the next two years, these programs will drive inclusion and facilitate participation across Australia.

Programs supported by this funding include:

·       Support for Women and Girls in Coaching and Officiating (Department of Health and Aged Care grant):

Coaches and officials are the backbone of athletics, yet women and girls are often under-represented in these critical roles at different levels. This initiative will tackle barriers such as time commitments and access to training and accreditation, providing targeted support to increase participation and progression across these two key areas of the sport.

·       Able With Athletics (Department of Social Services grant):

A new initiative developed by Athletics Australia and supported by its Member Associations and disability inclusion bodies, Able With Athletics will create tailored participation opportunities for people with disabilities, particularly children and those with autism. With a focus on reducing barriers to entry and creating inclusive environments, the program has been designed to ensure more people can experience the joy and benefits of the sport.

·       Play Well Investment (Australian Sports Commission):

Athletics Australia’s partnership with the Australian Sports Commission will see a significant boost in its Play Well funding, nearly doubling its previous annual investment. Designed to support the delivery of resourcing and programs across the sport, the investment will allow Athletics Australia and its Member Associations to further invest in initiatives that support participation growth and engage new communities.

“This significant increase in funding from the Australian Government is a transformative step in helping our sport grow at the grassroots level, and is critical as we look to make athletics more welcoming and inclusive for all Australians,” Athletics Australia CEO Simon Hollingsworth said.

“The investment is recognition of the work we have done to grow participation in athletics and of the Government’s confidence in Athletics Australia to further grow the footprint of the sport.

“Athletics is the foundation of movement – something we have all experienced – and it invites everyone in. Together, these programs and initiatives will help to break down barriers, foster inclusion and promote wellbeing across all corners of Australia, ensuring our sport reflects the diversity of the community we serve.”

The funding builds on a successful year for Athletics Australia and positions the organisation as a leader in driving participation and inclusivity across the nation. Following the momentum of the Paris 2024 Games and with Brisbane 2032 on the horizon, these initiatives will aid Athletics Australia to build a thriving, accessible and sustainable athletics community in Australia.

“With these investments, whether it’s empowering women and girls, supporting people with disabilities to give athletics a go, growing programs like Next Athletics, shaping our facilities strategy or showcasing the benefits of participation, more people will have the opportunity to engage with our sport,” Hollingsworth said.

“We acknowledge the support of the Australian Government to help our sport grow and the benefits this brings to communities across the country.”
