About Sporting Schools 

Sporting Schools is a $320 million Australian Government initiative designed to help schools to increase children's participation in sport, and to connect them with community sporting opportunities. 

Australian Athletics is delighted to offer its Sporting Schools programs as an introduction to team-based activities, in an age-appropriate format focused on fun and keeping kids moving. The focus of the program is on skill development, building a generation of active, healthy, sport-loving children whilst most importantly having fun.

Australian Athletics School Programs 

Australian Athletics offers flexible primary school and secondary school programs to meet the individual needs of schools.  

Co-designed with World Athletics, Australian Athletics is the only endorsed educator and provider delivering the Kids’ Athletics and Run Active programs, as games-based run, jump, and throw activities that support essential skill development aligned with the Australian Curriculum. 

The delivery of programs can be adjusted by the number of sessions (minimum of 4) to suit a school’s needs and budget. 

Programs can be delivered in schools internally via a Teacher-Delivered program (including accreditation and session resources) or externally via a Coach-Delivered program by experienced and accredited Australian Athletics coaches. 

Primary Schools

Kids’ Athletics is a highly engaging games-based participation program which focuses on the development of run, jump and throw skills through fun & engaging program delivered in three levels to cover all age groups at primary school: 

  1. Beginner (Prep – Grade 2) 

  2. Intermediate (Grade 3 – 4) 

  3. Advanced (Grade 5 – 6) 

The program is fully aligned with all relevant school curriculum competencies and has been shown to support the development of physical literacy across all four domains (physical, psychological, social, and cognitive) through independent research.  

Programs can be delivered in schools internally via a Teacher-Delivered program (including accreditation and session resources) or externally via a Coach-Delivered program by experienced and accredited Australian Athletics coaches.

This is an adapted version of the Kids’ Athletics program, catering for students with intellectual disabilities and autism. It has been designed by Australian Athletics in partnership with Special Olympics Australia for delivery in special education environments. Coaches are purposefully trained and provided with additional resources to deliver inclusive programs and to adapt activities to suit the needs of participating students.

Australian Athletics’ Run Active is a fun, games-based progressive running/fitness program for primary students. This 4-to-8-week program consists of a range of age and developmentally appropriate activities that promote enjoyment of physical activity, development of physical literacy, and provides a basis for an active lifestyle. 

Programs can be delivered in schools internally via a Teacher-Delivered program (including accreditation and session resources) or externally via a Coach-Delivered program by experienced and accredited Australian Athletics coaches.

SECONDARY Schools

Novo Athletics is a non-traditional athletics program designed for secondary school students in Years 7 and 8 to develop their competence and capability to confidently engage in sport and a healthy lifestyle.  

The focus is on fun, fitness and increased competence rather than gaining sport specific skills.  

Novo Athletics aims to engage all participants with a variety of basic athletics movements of run, jump and throw through team-based activities.  

The delivery of the product can be modified by the number of sessions willing to be delivered internally (teacher) or externally (Australian Athletics sourced coach).

Sporting Schools – Community Athletics Coach

Become A Sporting Schools Coach 

We welcome new and experienced coaches to get involved in delivering athletics in schools through our Sporting Schools Program. Australian Athletics offers a wide range of training options and on-going support through our Athletics Learning Centre.

About the Coaching role 

Sporting Schools coaches deliver Kids’ AthleticsRun Active and NOVO athletics programs in primary and secondary schools during school terms. Programs cater to children from Foundation through to Year 8 and are run over 4-8 weeks during school hours. 

Australian Athletics manages all aspects of the booking process via the Sporting Schools portal to provide coaches with ongoing opportunities to accept and deliver a school program. Accredited coaches are provided with program-specific online training and level manuals to modify programs to the appropriate level of participants. 

  • Coaching accreditation recognised by Australian Athletics, World Athletics, and the Australian Sports Commission 
  • Free Kids’ Athletics, Run Active and/or NOVO Athletics upskilling 

  • Access to over 50 free courses in the Athletics Learning Centre 

  • This is a paid position: coaches are renumerated according to their level of accreditation ($40-$60/hour) 

  • Casual and flexible hours available to suit coaches 

  • Free Australian Athletics coaching shirt provided 

  • Annual membership includes comprehensive coaching insurance 

  • Personalised public profile on Australian Athletics’ ‘Find A Coach’ page 

  • Opportunities to engage in other coaching programs and events 

Accreditation 

Coaches who are already accredited as a Level 1 Community Athletics Coach or Recreational Running Coach (or above) are invited to simply indicate their interest in becoming a Sporting Schools coach via email as below. Our Sporting Schools team will walk you through the onboarding process including access to upcoming school programs. 

Coaches who would like to complete an accreditation in order to become a Sporting Schools coach are encouraged to visit our Athletics Learning Centre to enrol. Once an accreditation course is completed, express your interest in coaching within the Sporting Schools program via email as below.  

Eligibility 
  • Be aged 18 years or older 

  • Hold a current Working With Children Check (or state equivalent) 

  • Confirm adequacy of insurance (included in your annual coaching membership) 

Accredited Courses 
  • Level 1 Community Athletics Coach 

  • Recreational Running Coach

Programs

As one of the largest sport providers in the Sporting Schools program, Australian Athletics successfully delivers over 800 programs, reaching over 100,000 children each year across every state. 

Australian Athletics has developed 3 curriculum aligned athletics programs available to schools: 

  • Kids’ Athletics (Primary School)* 

  • Novo Athletics (Secondary School – Years 7/8) 

  • Run Active (both Primary and Secondary – Years 7/8) 

Programs are mapped to the Australian curriculum and delivered in a games-based format to maximise participation while developing fundamental movement skills in running, jumping, and throwing. They are not event specific, or performance based.  

*We have also partnered with Special Olympics Australia to deliver an adapted version of the Kids’ Athletics program, catering for students with intellectual disabilities and autism.
