Captain Kurt wins BRONZE

Australian Paralympic Team captain, Kurt Fearnley, has won a fourth consecutive Paralympic medal in the T54 wheelchair 5000m at Rio 2016.

Crossing third in a time of 11:02.37 as Prawat Waharom (THA) won gold, Fearnley’s performance adds a 12th Paralympic Games medal to his impressive trophy cabinet, with the 35-year-old to compete in the men’s T54 wheelchair 1500m and marathon in the days to come.

Fearnley’s wheelchair racing teammate Angela Ballard (NSW) also won bronze on day four of athletics in the Paralympic Stadium, as Taylor Doyle (NSW) delivered silver in the T38 long jump for athletes with cerebral palsy.

Her second medal at Rio 2016, Ballard’s third spot in the T53 wheelchair 400m continues her impressive campaign at Rio 2016, with three more events on her competition schedule before competition concludes. She clocked 55.28, as Hongzhuan Zhou (CHN) won gold in a world record time of 54.43.

Doyle is competing at her maiden Paralympic Games. She soared 4.62m to ensure her named was etched on the second place medal, as Junfei Chen (CHN) won gold. Doyle’s series also included leaps of 4.42m, 4.06m, 4.50m, 4.51m and a foul.

Erin Cleaver (NSW) joined Doyle on the runway, jumping 4.51m to place 5th overall. Competing in the men’s T20 long jump for athletes with intellectual disability, Nicholas Hum (Vic) finished 5th with a jump of 6.89m.

In other Australian results on day four:
-          Brad Scott (WA) placed 6th in the final of the men’s T37 1500m for athletes with cerebral palsy, clocking 4:25.98.
-          Stopping the clock in 11.17, Gabriel Cole (SA) finished 7th in the final of the men’s T47 100m for athletes with arm deficiencies.
-          Competing at his maiden Paralympic Games, high school student, Jaryd Clifford (Vic), finished 7th in the T12 visually impaired 1500m in a time of 3:56.67.
-          Jemima Moore (Vic) crossed in 6th place in her heat of the T54 wheelchair 400m and did not progress to the final.
-          Jake Lappin (Vic) and Sam Carter (Qld) placed 3rd (48.88) and 5th (49.24) respectively in their heats of the men’s T54 wheelchair 400m.

Australia has now won nine medals in athletics at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
