Australian Athletics is pleased to announce the appointment of former Athletics West Chair Tim Lyons to its Board of Directors, following his endorsement at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting today.
Lyons brings more than a decade of governance experience in athletics, alongside a distinguished career as a lawyer specialising in commercial litigation, workplace relations and family property law at his practice Gibson Lyons in Perth.
Having most recently served as Chair of Athletics West since 2021, Lyons has played a pivotal role in shaping the direction of the sport in Western Australia since the 2020 merger between Athletics Western Australia and Little Athletics WA.
His leadership has been integral to the growth and strategic alignment of athletics in the state and he has contributed significantly to the national landscape as a member of the Australian Athletics Board Nominations Committee, Special Awards Committee and as a Member Association observer on the board.
A life member of both the University of Western Australia Athletics Club and the UWA Little Athletics Centre, Lyons has also served as President of both organisations for a decade, reflecting his deep connection to the sport at all levels. A passionate coach and a current Masters athlete, Lyons also continues to mentor young throwers including athletes at the national level.
Australian Athletics President Jane Flemming OLY welcomed Lyons’ appointment, highlighting his long-standing contribution to the athletics community.
“Tim has been an exceptional advocate for athletics at every level, from club and community sport through to state and national governance,” Flemming said.
“His experience as both a lawyer and a leader within the sport brings invaluable perspective to the Board, particularly in areas of stakeholder engagement, integrity and legal governance. We’re delighted to welcome him as we continue building the future of Australian Athletics.”
Lyons said he was honoured to join the Australian Athletics Board at a time of growth and opportunity for the sport.
“I’m excited to be given this opportunity to contribute to the sport I love at a time when I think it has been generating unprecedented interest. I want to ensure everyone is able to participate in athletics in whatever capacity and at whatever level they choose.”
Flemming also expressed gratitude to outgoing Director and former Audit and Risk Committee chair Merrick Howes for his service:
“On behalf of the Board, I’d like to thank Merrick for his time, insight and contribution to Australian Athletics. His professionalism and commitment have been greatly valued, and we wish him the very best for the future.”
