Rio Tinto Athletics for the Outback Brings Energy and Opportunity to the Pilbara

From May 5–8, the Pilbara pulsed with energy as Rio Tinto Athletics for the Outback (AFTO) brought athletics to life through an action-packed week of sport, community connection and opportunity for remote schools.

Led by Australian Athletics’ Sam Ajisafe, AFTO delivered hands-on “Run, Jump, Throw” sessions across Karratha, Roebourne, Port Hedland and Newman, sparking excitement and participation in students of all ages. The week kicked off at Peg’s Creek Primary School, where Years 1–6 got active and inspired. From there, the momentum grew with sessions at Roebourne District High School, Hedland Senior High School and Newman Senior High School.

Across four days, 285 students took part in high-energy coaching, building confidence, developing athletic skills, and most importantly—having fun.

“It’s been an incredible opportunity for our kids to experience something new,” said Peg’s Creek Primary School Principal Kate Mouda-Hughes. “It adds another layer of opportunity in sport that they wouldn’t normally get.”

Peg’s Creek teacher Emily Durrington added, “Having someone like Sam come out—who lives and breathes athletics—makes a real difference. It lights a spark in our students.”

That spark was evident as students thrived in a supportive, inclusive environment that championed effort, improvement, and belief in what’s possible—no matter where you’re from.

“This kind of opportunity is so important for regional schools,” said Sarah Hamilton, also from Peg’s Creek. “It shows kids that if they put in the effort, amazing things can happen—even from right here in the Pilbara.”

The program is already shaping its return—this time eyeing new communities like Tom Price, Paraburdoo and Pannawonica.

Sam Ajisafe acknowledged the driving force behind it all: “Rio Tinto has been the backbone of this program. Their ongoing support makes it possible for us to reach these remote communities and inspire the next generation of athletes.”

Rio Tinto Athletics for the Outback continues to prove that powerful partnerships and meaningful connections can build lasting change—bringing opportunity, joy, and potential to every corner of regional Australia.
