What you can do to get fit in 2017

A new year is upon us and resolutions made on the night of the 31st of December are typically focused on making big life changes, such as getting fit.

Usually those lofty goals thought up after a few strong beverages during Christmas lunch last for a few weeks, or sometimes just a few days.

Significant changes to anyone’s lifestyle usually cannot be made on such a whim, so here are five things you can easily embrace in the new year to implement a sustainable fitness regime.

  1. Make a commitment to do your local parkrun on a consistent basis, get out that new calendar and lock in a few Saturday mornings.

  2. Sign up for a popular fun run at the Sydney Running Festival or Melbourne Marathon to give yourself a goal to get motivated.

  3. Join a local running group, or better yet start your own with a friend. Knowing someone else is going to be there will keep you going if enthusiasm dips.

  4. Learn from the best and get one our athletes’ books – Olympic champions Sally Pearson and Kurt Fearnley have biographies out now.

  5. Get along to Nitro Athletics at Lakeside Stadium next February and be inspired by the world’s best athletes, including nine-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt.
