Kirra Wright’s journey in athletics started aged 9 at Primary School. From the Victorian country town of Wallan, located 45 km north of Melbourne, Kirra, a T36 athlete competes in the shot put and sprints. For the teenager, two of her memorable moments in athletics, have been competing at the Maurie Plant meet in 2025 and winning a medal in the open shot put at the Australian Championships.
Kirra has made terrific progress in the 100m this year. After starting with 15.74 in Ballarat in November, she improved that to 15.18 in Melbourne in March. At the Nationals in Perth she clocked 15.28, however running into a 1.1m/s wind, it was statistically her best performance of the year.
An indigenous athlete of the Gundijimurra people, Kirra’s ultimate goal is to compete at the Paralympics. Speaking about challengers, Kirra said: “Probably my biggest challenge would be the questions that I have had to face about my disability, especially when my condition is such a hidden one.”
Kirra’s makes her Australian team debut at the World Para Athletics Championships in India.
Hero: Mali Lovell and Rhiannon Clarke…Advice to your young self: I think just go and give things a go, as you never know where it could lead…Effect of her disability: I have cerebral palsy, it effects my walking, strength and coordination…Biggest influence in career: I would have to say my parents and my coaches…Hobbies: I love walking my dogs, going to the beach and definitely going to the movies… What motivates you to compete and train: I think having a supportive network, which really drives me
