Australian Athletics is proud to announce the creation of the Mark Dadswell Photography Award, honouring the legacy of one of Australia’s most respected athletics photographers and passionate sportsman.
Born in Stawell, Victoria, Dadswell’s love of athletics saw him first compete at the famous Stawell Gift Carnival before transitioning from athlete to storyteller behind the lens.
Across a celebrated career, Dadswell captured three Olympic Games, multiple World Championships and major domestic events, and had his work recognised at the World Press Photo Awards and across the global photographic community.
Dadswell’s photography was distinguished not just by technical brilliance and creative vision, but by the humanity and spirit he brought to every image. Equally known for his generosity and mentorship, he championed young photographers and lesser-known athletes throughout his life.
The Mark Dadswell Photography Award will celebrate exceptional photography that captures the essence of athletics. Open to both amateur and professional photographers, entry is available to any photographer who captures an Australian athlete competing at an Australian Athletics sanctioned event or on the international stage during the 2025 calendar year.
A panel of industry experts will shortlist the top ten images, with a final judging panel — comprising two members nominated by the Australian Athletics Special Awards Committee and one independent photographic expert — selecting the winner and top three images.
With the inaugural award set to be announced in January 2026, entries will open up in December 2025, with more information on how to enter to follow.
Entrants will be able to submit up to three photographs, accompanied by captions, technical information, and a short biography.
Finalists and the winner will receive commemorative awards and have a portfolio of their work showcased by Australian Athletics on its channels.
The Mark Dadswell Photography Award will ensure Mark’s enduring passion, skill, and generosity continues to inspire generations to come.
