Australians leading from behind the scenes on world stage

When the spotlight shines on athletes at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo and the World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi, a dedicated team of Australians are also at the heart of the action, ensuring the competitions run with precision, fairness and integrity.

From photo finishes to technical rulings, their work is largely unseen by the general public but it is vital. These officials carry the same green and gold pride as the athletes they support, demonstrating that Australia’s influence on world sport extends far beyond medals and results.

In Tokyo, Janet Nixon (NSW) will take her place as the World Athletics Photo Finish Judge, delivering results with split second accuracy.

Helen Roberts (QLD), serving as a World Athletics Referee, ensures every event adheres to the rules of competition, while Zoe Eastwood-Bryson (SA) lends her expertise as a Race Walking Judge, where sharp eyes and technical knowledge are essential.

On the Jury of Appeal, Brian Roe (TAS) applies his decades of experience to adjudicate protests and safeguard fairness for all competitors.

Meanwhile, in New Delhi, the focus shifts to the World Para Athletics Championships, where Caroline Jackman (SA) and Kim Owens (NSW) uphold the highest standards as International Technical Officials. Their work balances technical excellence with a deep understanding of Para Athletics, ensuring every athlete has the opportunity to perform in an environment of fairness and respect.

Together, this group of Australians represents more than ‘just’ officiating. They embody commitment, impartiality and expertise; all qualities that allow the world’s best athletes to compete on the biggest stage.
