Caldwell to chase Adelaide Invitational hat-trick

Reigning Australian champion and Olympic 800m runner Abbey Caldwell is ready to chase her third consecutive Adelaide Invitational victory, dropping down in distance after a statement performance to open her campaign in the Chemist Warehouse Summer Series.

Slated to lead a slick field at the SA Athletics Stadium on March 14, Caldwell (VIC, Gavin Burren) headlines the Polytan Women’s 800m, where the Olympic semi-finalist will look to flex her form as the race to Glasgow for the 2026 Commonwealth Games heats up.

Already the meet record holder with the 2:00.81 she set in 2024, Caldwell will look to break new ground in Adelaide, having shattered the two-minute barrier 18 times in her career to date – none faster than her personal best of 1:57.70.

“I really like the atmosphere of the track and it’s always a good meet in terms of the crowd and conditions. I just like showing up for the domestic season and enjoying the process of racing, which I always get in Adelaide,” Caldwell said.

“I have done a lot of speed development over the last couple of years and I’m a lot more comfortable in fast races. I think anyone can run tactically and have the right race on the right day, but you kind of need to make it hard to find out who the best athletes are.”

Set to take on World Championships representatives Carley Thomas (VIC, Craig Mottram) and Tess Kirsopp-Cole (VIC, Gavin Burren) who own identical career bests at 1:59.95, Caldwell is welcoming the challenge as Australian distance running continues to rise in unison.

“You can’t slack off at the moment because of the strength in Australian running. Especially in the 800m, even in a race with runners ranging from 1:57 to 2:03 – the 2:03 runners are often still in the race at 700m. You are always kept honest,” Caldwell said.

“No matter who is showing up or what race it is on the domestic circuit, you are always going to be tested.”

Adding to the field, the versatile Jaylah Hancock-Cameron (NSW, Andae Kalemusic) will demonstrate her range, while 19-year-old Ivy Boothroyd (NSW, Ned Brophy-Williams) will continue her quest on the road to the 2026 World Athletics Under 20 Championships – already challenging her personal best of 2:03.64 this season.

The 2026 Adelaide Invitational will be hosted as part of the Chemist Warehouse Summer Series, taking place at the SA Athletics Stadium from March 13-14.
