A fresh chapter of athletics is about to hit the Apple Isle, with the Hobart Track Classic confirmed for Saturday, February 28 as part of the Chemist Warehouse Summer Series.
Next year’s meet arrives with a renewed identity and status, joining the World Athletics Continental Tour as a bronze level meet to ensure athletes competing in Hobart get quality competition opportunity, the ability to earn world ranking points and prize money and impress selectors ahead of selection for the Commonwealth Games and World Under 20 Championships.
For fans, it means one thing: more of Australia’s best athletes competing on Tasmanian soil, from Olympians, Paralympians, rising local stars and the next generation of talent chasing breakthrough performances under lights at Domain Athletic Centre.
Australian Athletics CEO Simon Hollingsworth said he was excited to bring world class athletics back to Tasmania for the first time since 2016.
“Australian athletics is at an all time high, with not only its popularity increasing but its standard at an international level. There’s no better time to bring a Track Classic back to Hobart and we’re looking forward to seeing Tasmanians embrace the sport as they do at a local level.”
The Hobart Track Classic will be the second of four one-day high performance meets across the country, joining the Perth Track Classic, Adelaide Invitational and the Maurie Plant Meet in the Chemist Warehouse Summer Series before the Australian Athletics Championships takes place in Sydney.
Olympic finalist and proud Tasmanian product Stewart McSweyn said he is looking forward to seeing Tasmanian locals embrace athletics in their own backyard.
“Tasmania is where my athletics journey started, so having a major meet here means a lot. The support from people back home has always pushed me even after moving away from home, and I’m excited that they’ll now be able to see some of Australia’s favourite athletes compete in person.”
Tickets for the Hobart Track Classic will go on sale in January, and fans are encouraged to secure their seats early. Head to the Australian Athletics website for more information.
