Sunday’s iconic Sydney Marathon included the inaugural Australian Age Group Marathon Championships and the Australian Clubs Marathon Championships, adding to the traditional Australian Open Marathon Championships.

The strong participation and results across the board have only bolstered Sydney’s bid to be added to the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors, already being awarded the 2024 Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda Age Group Championships.

Despite the gruelling conditions presenting soaring temperatures, people power took over on the roads of Sydney as masses flocked to the opportunity to be involved in an event that could reshape the Australian athletics landscape.

“Achieving the record of Australia’s largest marathon is a testament to the passion and dedication of runners from all over the world, coming to Sydney to support our bid to become the next Abbott World Marathon Major,” said Wayne Larden, Race Director, Sydney Marathon.

Australian record holders Sinead Diver and Brett Robinson were crowned Open champions, but with age groups beginning at 30-34 years and running all the way through to 75+ years – it’s time to celebrate the Australian Age Group Marathon champions!
