Athletics Australia confirms that Stewart McSweyn has withdrawn from the team competing at the 2022 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Serbia next week.

McSweyn made the decision to withdraw today, following advice from medical professionals after he was unable to finish a 5,000m race in Melbourne last night. McSweyn contracted Covid earlier in the year, and has endured complications months after recovering from the illness.

“Stewart is one of our strongest distance athletes on the track and while it’s unfortunate that he has had to withdraw from the World Athletics Indoor Championships, we unreservedly support this decision,” Athletics Australia General Manager, High Performance Andrew Faichney said.

“The health and wellbeing of our athletes must always come first, and we wish him all the best with his recovery. We look forward to seeing Stewart back on the track when he is ready.”

Australia will now send a team of 15 to the World Athletics Indoor Championships, which take place from 18-20 March in Belgrade, Serbia.
