South Australian sports fans will have front row seats to the throws show that is Matthew Denny at the Adelaide Invitational, with the Olympic bronze medallist ready to launch the night into orbit when he enters the circle on March 14.
The two-time Diamond League champion will return to the SA Athletics Stadium where he has delivered historic results in recent years, including a national record of 69.35m to win the 2024 Australian title.
Denny has since raised that bar to 74.78m to sit at number two on the all-time list behind only world record holder Mykolas Alekna, with the global throwing powerhouse and three-time Olympian eager to light up the Adelaide Invitational stage.
“The meets are always so much fun there. I like the city, the track is nice, the conditions are usually good and the organisers are lovely to work with,” Denny said.
The 2026 instalment of the event marks 10 years since Denny’s first triumph in Adelaide, where he reigned supreme as a 19-year-old with a 62.15m throw at the 2016 Adelaide Track Classic.
“There is always a good little crowd that shows up, especially for the discus which I really enjoy competing in front of. I have a few friends there as well, so it all ties in nicely,” Denny said.
The Allora product has locked the Adelaide Invitational into a busy 2026 schedule which will culminate in the Commonwealth Games and Diamond League Final, with March 14 marking the only chance for The Festival State to see Denny in action this year.
“We want to try and do as much as we can in the domestic season and really enjoy our throwing, but obviously produce some good results as well,” Denny said.
“We have the Commonwealth Games this year and I expect it to be really competitive. Even though it might look a bit different, there will be the same athletes and the same competition. I would love to throw the Games record.”
Adelaide has been a happy hunting ground for Denny and is still home to the farthest discus throw on Australian soil in history, with that marker set at the 69.35m he threw on his way to the 2024 Australian title.
Denny will also contest the Hobart Track Classic on February 28 where he will open his domestic campaign, with further announcements on his 2026 competition schedule to come.
The 2026 Adelaide Invitational will be hosted as part of the Chemist Warehouse Summer Series, taking place at the SA Athletics Stadium from March 13-14.
