Teenage trailblazer Cameron Myers has confirmed the Maurie Plant Meet – Melbourne as one of his highest priorities in 2026, promising to put on a show as he eyes back-to-back wins at Australia’s premier one-day athletics meet on March 28.

The 19-year-old is one of the hottest names in global athletics right now having won the prestigious Wanamaker Mile in New York earlier this month, just one week after shattering the Australian 3000m record in Boston.

Myers has decimated the record books throughout his rise which includes the world record for Under-20 athletes in the mile, while his 1500m personal best of 3:29.80 makes him one of only three Australian men in history to have shattered the elusive 3:30 barrier.

At the 2025 instalment of the Maurie Plant Meet – Melbourne, Myers ran his competitors into the ground with a front-running masterclass to win the John Landy 1500m, which he would go on to replicate en route to his first Australian title.

“I’m really looking forward to coming back and running the Maurie Plant Meet on March 28,” Myers said.

“My win last year was at the time probably the biggest of my career! I’ve started the year well with some good runs indoors in the US and now I’ll be hoping to be strong here in the 1500m.”

The reigning Australian champion has opted to prioritise the World Athletics Continental Tour – Gold meet over a potential world title bid at the World Athletics Indoor Championships one week prior – eager to flex his form in front of his growing fan base on home soil.

“Being an Australian, it’s one of the biggest meets in our domestic calendar. It obviously means a lot to be there for a home crowd,” Myers said.

Myers is no stranger to making history but will have his work cut out for him in Melbourne, with the meet record set by William Chirchir (KEN) in 2000 with a time of 3:32.55, and the fastest time ever on Australian soil standing at the 3:31.25 run by world record holder Hicham El Guerrouj (MAR) in 2001.

Challengers to take on Myers in the John Landy 1500m will be announced in the coming weeks, with Australia’s star-studded middle-distance crop ready and raring alongside international rivals hoping for a crack at one of the world’s best.

The 2026 Maurie Plant Meet – Melbourne is the first of 12 World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meets for 2026, sitting just under the Diamond League in status. Oceania’s only Gold Level meet is supported by the Victorian Government through its Significant Sporting Events Program.

The 2025 Maurie Plant Meet – Melbourne was sold out, attracting 10,000 fans to Lakeside Stadium.
