Home | news | Trae Williams’ athletics career comes to an end

Trae Williams has today confirmed to Athletics Australia that he is retiring from Athletics to take up a career in Rugby 7s.

Trae has had a sensational career representing Australia in athletics;

  • He represented Australia at the Youth Olympic Games (2014) and World U20 Championships (2016), winning a bronze medal at the Youth Olympic Games.
  • As a senior athlete he represented Australia on five occasions and Oceania once. The highlights being fourth place at the world relays and Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and a bronze at the 2018 Continental Cup.
  • He was an integral member of the successful Australian men’s 4x100m relay.
  • His breakthrough came at the 2018 Commonwealth Games trials where he ran a 10.10 100m, which was the fastest time by an Australian for 11 years.

Athletics Australia Head of High Performance and Coaching Christian Malcolm said:

“Trae has been great for the green and gold and has been an asset in Australian teams over the past five years.  While we will miss having him around, it is important that we continue to work hard to retain our talented athletes in the sport"

Athletics Australia CEO Darren Gocher said:

“It’s a shame that we have lost Trae from athletics. Trae is a great competitor and a talented athlete. We wish him all the very best in the next steps of his sporting career and thank him for the enormous contribution he has made to Australian Athletics.

"While we are saddened to lose him, it demonstrates the importance of athletics as a foundation sport, to the broader Australian sporting landscape,” he said.

Trae most recently represented Australia at the IAAF World Relays in the 4x100m men’s team with Alex Hartmann, Zach Holdsworth and Jake Doran.
