In Episode 2 of Under the Surface, powered by Rio Tinto we explore how Australia’s athletics champions are giving back and inspiring the next generation from the heart of regional towns to the road to Brisbane 2032.
For discus thrower Taryn Gollshewsky, her journey began in Bundaberg at a local school carnival. From a sprinter to a national discus champion by 13, Taryn’s rise is powered by her mother’s unwavering support and her own belief that big dreams can thrive in small towns. Today, as a teacher and coach, she’s passing on that same inspiration to young athletes in Queensland’s Wide Bay region.
“I want to be living proof to young regional athletes that despite where they live, they too can succeed,” says Gollshewsky. “If they commit to working hard, anything is possible.”
That same belief fuels Athletics for the Outback, the Rio Tinto–supported initiative bringing athletics to remote and regional communities across Australia. From Port Hedland to Exmouth, the program is led by coaches like Sam Ajisafe, who’s helping kids discover confidence, teamwork, and joy through sport.
“Athletics for the Outback is about creating opportunities for kids that wouldn’t usually have them,” Ajisafe explains. “Even when we leave, they want to keep going, that’s when you know it’s working.”
Teachers like Seana McCourt from Port Hedland Primary School have seen the program’s impact firsthand.
“We couldn’t do it without Rio Tinto’s support,” she says. “The kids have gained skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging. It’s changed how they see themselves.”
The episode also features insights from Olympian Jane Flemming, who reflects on resilience, growth, and gratitude — lessons that transcend competition.
“Success isn’t medals or money,” says Flemming. “It’s the kind of human you are, and how you help others rise with you.”
From Paralympians to national champions, the athletes featured — including Sarah Carli, Rheed McCracken, Liz Clay, Rhiannon Clarke, and others share who inspires them, paying tribute to the teammates and mentors who’ve shaped their paths. Together, their stories reveal how connection, opportunity, and belief are building the foundation for Australia’s sporting future.
As Brisbane 2032 draws closer, partnerships like that between Rio Tinto and Athletics Australia are helping ensure every child, no matter where they live, can chase their potential, both on and off the track.
