Biography

Ian Dewhurst started very young in Little Athletics in the under-10 aged group d. He participated in many events including race walks which he was very competitive at. Ian started to emerge in his speciality the 400m hurdles in March 2008 winning the Australian junior title. Over the next few years, while studying physiotherapy, he gradually lowered his PB. The breakthrough came in 2013 when domestically he ran four consecutive PB taking his best from 51.05 to 49.93. Making his Australian team debut in July at the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, he was brilliant through the rounds running another PB (49.89) in the semi and claiming bronze in the final in 49.96. He also helped the 4x400m relay team to be sixth in the final.

There was a further progression in 2014 to 49.52 to number 11 all-time Australian and the national title. Selected for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, he was run out in the heats with a time of 50.45. “I had a disappointing campaign at the CG2014 in Glasgow.” After an injury in the 2016 domestic season, he chased a qualifier for the Rio Olympics in Europe but fell just short. Back in top form during the 2017 domestic season, he regained his national title in a quick 49.77, but was still just short of a London 2017 World Championships qualifier and opted not to chase the standard in Europe, but remain in Australia and prepare for a shot at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

He started the season very well in December clocking 49.83. After a few hiccups, he defended his national title in February running 49.80 and achieved selection for his second Commonwealth Games.

He has set up a physio practice in Perth where he is now based.
