Personal Bests

Javelin Throw: 67.70m (Luzern SUI, 9 Jul 2019)

Kelsey has a medal of every colour – Bronze at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Silver at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, and Gold at the 2019 World Championships in Doha.

But she would dearly like to elevate her fortunes at Olympic level after finishing 28th in the qualifying round of the Rio Games – only the top 12 move through to the final.

Considering her throw of 66.56m to become IAAF World Champion in 2019 would have won her Gold in Rio 2016, Barber is well and truly in the ball park.

Kelsey-Lee is currently ranked world No.1 on IAAF list (as of 6/7/21). Her PB is 67.70m in 2019.

“ ‘Why on earth do you do that?’ people ask me when I tell them I throw javelin,” she said.

“Well, because I love that feeling when you get onto a big throw. A good throw feels seamless, kind of like you're threading a needle through the sky. It feels great knowing all the hard work you put in is worth it. So that's what I do. I train hard so that I can throw far and be the best in the world.

“Next stop - Tokyo 2021 and Olympic Gold.”

South African-born, Kelsey-Lee arrived in Australia as a nine-year-old during the 2000 Sydney Games to live on a dairy farm in Victoria. She currently lives in Canberra training at the AIS with Para-Athlete Jayden Sawyer (Gold 2017 World Championships, 5th 2019 World Championships).

Both are trained by Kelsey-Lee’s husband, Mike Barber.
