Briseis Brittain

Briseis Brittain enjoyed instant success in athletics when after starting her journey in the sport aged 10-years (in 2018), she competed at the National Championships in Melbourne that year. She was then living in Ramingining, a Yolŋu community of approximately 900 people located 435 kilometres west of Nhulunbuy and on the edge of the Arafura Wetlands.

“After COVID, my family and I moved permanently to Darwin so I could continue my education and further develop my athletics.”

In 2022 she joined Roger Chin’s squad and just three years later she made her Australian team debut at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi where she competed in the T38 200m and 400m. The highlight was making the 400m final where she placed 7th in 64.93, after a heat time of 64.18. In the 200m heats she set a PB time of 27.51.

With a T38 200m on the program for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, over the summer of 2025/26 she chased a time to rank in the top-7 and earn selection. She competed at the Australian All Schools (Melbourne), Perth Track Classic, WA State Championships (Perth), Maurie Plant Meet (Melbourne), Australian Open Championships (Sydney), ahead of a home meet, the Oceania Championships in Darwin. In June she was named on the Australian Commonwealth Games team.

Interesting fact about your family: My family and I spend almost every weekend fishing and hunting together…Interesting fact: When in community, I train by chasing wild pigs & magpie geese…Most memorable sporting achievement: Being selected in my first Australian Team for the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships…Sporting hero: My biggest hero has always been Cathy Freeman. I’ve always wanted to be like her and meeting her earlier this year was something I’ll remember forever. Another athlete I really admire is Sha’Carri Richardson…Most influential person in your career:

There have been so many people who have believed in me and helped me along the way. My family, my coach, and my teachers have all played an important role in helping me reach this point… Biggest challenge you’ve faced: Competing on the world stage alongside athletes I’ve looked up to for years. It’s exciting, but also pushes me to perform at my very best…Advice to your young self: Do what you love, have fun and believe in yourself… Hobbies: I love spending time on Country with my family, especially fishing and hunting…Sporting ambition: To do my very best, compete at the Paralympic Games, and make my family proud…Education: (in 2026) Year 12 student at Casuarina Senior College…Current club/Squad: Phoenix Development Squad and Darwin Athletics Club… Home town: I’ve spent my life between Darwin and Ramingining, and both places will always be home.
