ITLAS - Introduction To Teaching Little Athletics Skills

ITLAS online Learning Course

The ITLAS online Learning course will ensure participants have a greater understanding of the skills and techniques required in each Little Athletic event.

The focus is to build the base of education and allow participants to progress along their learning journey at their own pace, promoting large participation in a user-friendly platform that allows for continuous education and engagement.

ITLAS is a self - paced online course that is: Engaging, contains Text, Audio, Video Content, Short Quizzes, Event Group Digital Badges, and a provides a Course Certificate upon completion.

ITLAS is the fundamental component to assist volunteers in understanding the basic skills and techniques athletes require in Little Athletics, to help volunteers feel supported, more confident and comfortable when assisting athletes. 

It is great for parents, volunteers, or school teachers, who want to know a little more about the skills of the sport, so they can help assist children of primary school age.

Previous knowledge is not required.

Structure

The ITLAS online Learning course is divided into 4 modules of Warm Up, Track, Jumps, & Throws.

Within each module there are different events.

  • Warm Up – Progression of simple to complex dynamic Warm up drills
  • Track - Running including Starts, (Standing Start only) & Middle Distance, Hurdles,      Race Walking, and Relays
  • Jumps - Long Jump, Triple Jump and High Jump Scissors
  • Throws - Shot Put (Standing), Discus (Standing) and Javelin (3 step approach)

Outcomes

  • Better understand an appropriate working model for each Little Athletics event
  • Have a greater knowledge of appropriate drills, skills, and activities for each event
  • Identify some of the more common technical faults of each event
  • Better understand the development of athletes
  • Better understand how to organise a group safely

The ITLAS online Learning course is not an Officiating course; however, some rules will be incorporated into teaching the skills and performing the event.

Content

The ITLAS online Learning Course incorporates various methods of displaying information.

Every page has text, video and audio, outlining the information that is being presented.  This assists the users with different methods of learning.

ITLAS Overview Course assists the users with understanding the structure, showing how individual event courses build towards completing the event groups of Track, Jumps, or Throws.

A short Quiz of 3 - 4 simple multiple-choice questions highlighting the basic concepts outlined in the videos, follows each topic.  They are designed to reinforce the learnings and display the information once each question is answered.

Participants receive a Digital Badge once they complete an Event Group.

Participants can complete the Event Groups in any order.  Flexibility is built into the online Learning course to offer the participants a self-paced learning experience; at a level they are comfortable with.

Once participants complete all Event Groups, they can download or save a copy of the ITLAS Certificate.

ITLAS online Learning course is Free to all participants.

To assist with the ongoing education and accreditation of participants, ITLAS is now included in the Australian Athletics Level 1 Youth Coach Accreditation pathway.  Participants will be required to complete ITLAS prior to completing the other modules of the Level 1 Youth Coach course.
