Level 1 Youth Coach - Course Information

 

The Level 1 Youth Coach course focuses on developing core coaching skills, understanding physical literacy, and the 'Teaching Games for Understanding' model of sports development.

Target Athletes

The course has a focus on coaching athletes between 5-12 years of age and athletes new to the sport. The primary objective is to develop the fundamental movement skills and introduce athletics in a fun and inclusive format using a games-sense approach

FIT Model

This course gives coaches the required skills and knowledge to coach athletes in the following phases of the FIT Model of Development.

  • Fundamentals I
  • Fundamentals II

  • The Pillars of Good Communication (Relationships, Instruction, Demonstration, Observation, Analysis, and Feedback)
  • Group Management
  • Coaching Junior Athletes
  • Inclusive Coaching using the TREE Principle
  • Warm Ups and Cool Downs
  • Resistance Training for Beginning Athletes
  • Coaching a Technical Model - Running and Bounding
  • Coaching a Technical Model - Stranding Horizontal Jump, Walking Horizontal Jump, Running Horizontal Jump, Combined Jump Series
  • Coaching a Technical Model - Standing Vertical Jump
  • Coaching a Technical Model - Underarm Throw, Overarm Throw, Push Pass, Sling Throw, Standing Put
  • Leading a Kids' Athletics Program
  • Session Planning
  • Child Protection and Safeguarding

 

Requirements to Gain Accreditation

  • Completion of a one-day face to face course or 5-session online course
  • Completion of the PBTR - Child Protection online module
  • Completion of post-course assessment task
  • Working with Children Check clearance
  • Completion of 30 hours practical coaching in a club, school, professional, or private setting.

This course is run fully online or with a blended in-person and online delivery model. Check with your State Association to understand which model your course will use.

    Group Meetings: 5.5 hours

Required Competencies

1-CAC-1: Provide an environment for a variety of participants that is inclusive, enjoyable, safe, and involves maximum participation. 

1-CAC-2: Cater for the social and physical capabilities of individual participants.

1-CAC-3: Assess and manage the risks associated with athletics coaching.

1-CAC-4: Plan and organize a variety of activities that develop the fundamental movement skills of running, jumping, and throwing.

1-CAC-5: Plan and implement an appropriate training session.

1-CAC-6: Reflect on a training session and be able to make appropriate modifications.

1-CAC-7: Understand effective communication methods and begin practising effective and positive feedback. 

1-CAC-8: Understand the structure of athletics in Australia so as to best support athletes' involvement in the sport. 

1-CAC-9: Understand the Accredited Athletics Coach Framework within Australia. 

1-CAC-10: Adhere to the requirements of the Accredited Athletics Coach, including registration, member protection, and codes of conduct.
