Cameron Myers (ACT) has been named the winner of the prestigious Betty Cuthbert Medal for his incredible 1500m win at the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney earlier in April.

Myers, 19, won the race with a time of 3:29.85, bettering the Australian Allcomers Record for the second time in a month, after he did the same thing at the Maurie Plant Meet – Melbourne in March.

The Betty Cuthbert Medal is awarded every year by Australian Athletics to the athlete who is judged to have produced the most outstanding single performance at the Australian Athletics Championships.

“I’m very proud to be announced as the winner of the Betty Cuthbert Medal,” Myers said.

“I didn’t expect it, but yes, I’m very proud.”

There certainly wasn’t a shortage of strong performances at the Championships, which makes his win even more impressive.

Bruce McAvaney, who called Myers’ win in Sydney for Channel 7, believes he is a very worthy winner of the Medal.

McAvaney believes the way Myers is running his races reminds him of some past Australian legends of the sport of athletics.

“The performance was historic, he is the only person to run under 3.30 in our country,” McAvaney said.

“He broke a mark that had not been done before.

“The way he did it really sums it up, running from the front without fear.

“He is fearless.

“He reminds me of a combination of Ron Clarke and Herb Elliott.

“Ron has this insatiable desire to test himself.

“He was quite prepared to lose to win, and Herb had this ruthlessness about him.

“I feel there are a lot of Ron and Herb’s qualities in Cam.”

Australian Athletics CEO Simon Hollingsworth acknowledged Myers’ win.

“Cam Myers is a very worthy recipient of the Betty Cuthbert Medal, after his sensational performance in the 1500m at the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney,” he said.

“The way he ran that race from the start to the finish was truly world class.

“The year has started so strongly for Cam, we can’t wait to see what he does next including at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later in the year.”
