In celebration of National Volunteers Week, Athletics Australia is calling for nominations for the Chemist Warehouse Athletics Community Hero Awards.

Now in its third year, the Chemist Warehouse Community Hero Awards aim to recognise and celebrate the remarkable contributions of the unsung heroes within Australian athletics.

Shining a bright light on the individuals who selflessly dedicate their time, energy and passion to make a positive impact on the sport of athletics, the awards recognise exceptional individuals who go above and beyond to uplift and inspire the athletics participants across the country.

Athletics Australia is inviting members of the athletics community to nominate individuals who embody the true spirit of community and have made a significant difference in the lives of athletes.

These heroes might have demonstrated outstanding leadership, displayed exceptional sportsmanship, contributed to the development of athletes, or made a lasting impact on their local athletics community. The awards are open to individuals from all levels of the community, ranging from grassroots through to the elite level.

Nominations for the Chemist Warehouse Athletics Community Hero Awards can be submitted via the Athletics Australia website here starting from now until Monday, June 12 at 11.59pm.

Short listed nominees, to be announced on Monday, June 19, will receive a $500 gift card courtesy of Chemist Warehouse, with the individual crowned the 2023 Chemist Warehouse Community Hero to accept a $1,000 voucher.

Athletics Australia CEO Peter Bromley expressed his gratitude towards the extraordinary individuals who make a difference in athletics stating:

“The Chemist Warehouse Community Hero Awards provide us with an invaluable opportunity to acknowledge the tireless efforts of those who work behind the scenes to ensure the success and growth of our sport. We are thrilled to honour these exceptional individuals and shed light on their incredible contributions to the athletics community.”

Chemist Warehouse Director Mario Tascone added:

“Last year, we were overwhelmed by the amount of nominations we received for the Chemist Warehouse Community Hero Award, all of which entailed stories of passion and dedication.

“We’re looking forward to once again celebrating the people behind the scenes of athletics and their integral contributions to the sport at all levels – these heroes truly are the backbone of the sport and go above and beyond to uplift and inspire the wider Australian athletics community.”

Previous award winners include Peter Burke from Victoria for his commitment to the sport for more than 50 years, as well as Queensland’s Jacob Daniels who was last year recognised for his efforts in establishing one of Australia’s most remote athletics clubs on the Gulf of Carpentaria.
