To celebrate Global Running Day on 6 June, the IAAF has announced the creation of IAAF Run 24:1, a series of 24 one-mile runs that will include stops in 23 countries, uniting tens of thousands of runners around the world. A live stream of all 24 events will be available on a dedicated IAAF website.

Melbourne has been selected as one of the 24 cities worldwide. The event will be held at Melbourne University’s Rawlinson Track, at 2pm on Wednesday June 6.

Lisa Weightman, elite Australian athlete, Melbournian and a member of Melbourne University Athletic Club, has been named City Captain. Having recently returned home following her silver medal in the marathon at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Lisa said "I am honoured to be named City Captain and I look forward to celebrating Global Running Day through the IAAF Run 24:1 mile in Melbourne".

Celebrating its third year in 2018, Global Running Day is a grassroots initiative where people of all abilities and from all paths of life come together to celebrate their passion for running and inspire others to get moving.

“Running is accessible to everyone, it is fun, it is competitive,” said IAAF President Sebastian Coe. “It can be social, it can be solitary. It is testing, it is personal but most of all it builds strength, stamina, fitness and health. It is the mother of all sports. On Wednesday 6th of June, we want as many people as possible to celebrate Global Running Day – the biggest annual celebration of running.”

Participation is open and free to everybody, of all ages and abilities. To participate, you just need to register at https://run24-1.org/ Plan to arrive at the starting point no more than one hour before the start of the race to receive your bib.
