Athletics Australia relaunched the Australian Athletics Foundation, with the ‘Lane 10’ event in the Chairman’s Villa at Crown Melbourne.

Australian legend, Kurt Fearnley was the guest speaker on the night and made everyone in the room emotional as he told his wonderful journey in life.

“I grew up in a place where concrete was a bit of a luxury and to be in a wheelchair – doesn’t make that easy.

“I grew up doing a cross country where my brother would carry my chair up the hill and I would crawl. But I grew up knowing that as a nation we were true believers in sport.

“And from the age of 13 when I feel in love with wheelchair sports, I found where I wanted to be and it changed my life.

“Sport offered me opportunity, it offered me belief,” Fearnley said at the Australian Athletics Foundation event.

Athletics Australia put on the event to raise money so that the sport can help to find the next Kurt Fearnley.

Athletics Australia President Mark Arbib was another guest speaker in the room.

“The Foundation aims to financially support eligible Australian athletes, coaches and officials, helping turn their dreams into reality through the provision of scholarships and financial support,” Arbib said.

Over 150 people were in the room at Crown Melbourne and close to $100,000 was donated.

A big thanks must go to Australian champion – John Steffensen who helped put on the wonderful night for Australian Athletics.
