Medals galore overnight for Australia

Australians virtually made the medal plaza at the 9th World Para-Athletics Championships in Dubai their second home yesterday, such was the flurry of activity with victory ceremonies involving the green-and-gold.

Up first was new world champion ad world record holder, javelin thrower (F38) Corey Anderson.

He completed his event on Saturday night, but had to wait until Monday to receive his medal.

It was all worth it as proud mum Melissa was there to witness her 19-year-old son making a piece of history at his world titles debut.

“We couldn’t be happier for him as a family. He’s worked very hard the past six months to get over a niggling shoulder problem in his throwing arm.

“His dad Dean and brother Brodie were cheering him on back home too.”

The rest of Sunday’s competition brought another three medals Australia’s way – gold to James Turner (100m T36) in another world record time; silver to Sarah Edmiston (discus F64); and silver to Rheed McCracken (100m T34) – the third time he’s won silver for this event at a world championships.

The Australians medal haul over the first four days of the nine-day competition is 6 – 3 gold, 3 silver.
