Athletics Australia has today announced Perth as the host venue for both the 2022 and 2025 Australian Track & Field Championships.

The announcement was made today on Day 4 of the 2021 edition of the Championships in Sydney, where athletes from across the country are currently competing for coveted national titles in what is also the last major hit out on home soil before the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Delivered by Athletics Australia and supported by Tourism WA, Athletics West and VenuesWest, the 2022 and 2025 Australian Track and Field Championships will take place at the Western Australian Athletics Stadium, and will be the primary qualification trial for athletes aiming for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and both the 2022 and 2025 World Athletics and World Para Athletics Championships.

The Australian Track and Field Championships were originally scheduled to take place in Perth in 2021 and 2024, but were rescheduled as a result of COVID-19 and border closures.

Athletics Australia CEO Darren Gocher said he was thrilled to announce Perth as the host venue for next year and 2025, knowing there is an increasing appetite for athletics across WA from the grassroots level up.

“We’re so excited to finally be able to announce Perth as the host venue for the 2022 and 2025 Australian Track and Field Championships,” Gocher said.

“The Australian Track and Field Championships is the premiere event on the Australian athletics calendar, and we know there an increasing demand for athletics across Western Australia, making it the perfect location to host next year’s Championships and again in 2025.

“We were disappointed not to be able to travel to Perth for the Championships this year, however we guarantee next year’s event will be as exciting as athletes aim for selection for both World Championships teams and Commonwealth Games.”

The Australian Track and Field Championships determines Australia’s best athletes in more than 1,000 events and should international travel restrictions subside, will welcome more than 3,500 athletes from across the Oceania region.

WA Tourism Minister David Templeman welcomed the 2022 and 2025 Championships and the wider Australian athletics community to Perth.

“Securing the Australian Track and Field Championships in 2022 and 2025 will provide fantastic exposure for WA and highlight what makes our State such an incredible holiday destination.

“Mass participation events such as the championships will also attract thousands of competitors, officials and supporters to WA, which will further support our hotels and local businesses.

“They also help inject millions of dollars into the economy through visitor spend, which is important in our State’s recovery from the impact of COVID-19.”
