Australian Athletics CEO Simon Hollingsworth is calling for the athletics community to nominate a deserving person for the Peter Norman Humanitarian Award for 2026.
Nominations close in a week’s time, closing on Thursday September 17 at 5pm.
The Peter Norman Humanitarian Award was inaugurated by Australian Athletics in 2018 as a way to honour the legacy of Norman as both an athlete and an advocate for human rights.
Each year on October 9, a member of the Australian athletics community who exemplifies the spirit of Peter Norman through their work in human rights, equality and humanitarian causes is presented this prestigious award.
The award is open to anyone within the Australian Athletics community, including athletes, coaches, volunteers, officials, team staff, AA staff, or recreational runners.
“For me this award recognises the reach and the power of athletics, and the impact it can have on the wider community,” Australian Athletics CEO Simon Hollingsworth said.
“I encourage everyone in the athletics community to have a think about who deserves this award and nominate.”
Last year the award was won by Geelong athletics coach Anula Costa.
“Receiving this award is such a surprise and a shock,” Costa said last year.
“I am so emotional.
“This is such a humble award and I am very proud to accept it.
“It was a very close friend of Peter Norman’s after being selected to the 1999 Olympics Academy for officials and coaching, and since then, Peter and I were greatly connected through athletics and friendship.
“Receivng an award in his honour has made my dad and my life in Australia with the sport I love.”
