Statement from Athletics Australia

Athletics Australia apologises for human and technical error which resulted in the barrier for the water jump in the 2000m steeplechase for the under 15 and under 16 women’s and men’s age groups being set too high.

As this affected all athletes in each race equally the events will not be re-run. All times achieved remain valid as the barrier was set too high rather than too low.

We acknowledge that this however resulted in athletes not being able to achieve the times they had hoped for during the championship.

Following a suggestion from the representative of one of the competing athletes two invitation steeplechase events will be offered as follows at the end of Tuesday night’s session for those athletes who took part and who wish to run again:

5.10pm Under 15 and Under 16 Men – Invitation 2000m steeplechase

5.20pm Under 15 and Under 16 Women – Invitation 2000m steeplechase

Those athletes for whom we have been provided with a valid mobile number will receive an offer by text to participate in the races. In order to participate athletes must respond to the offer by 2pm Tuesday. All results achieved will be fully valid for rankings and record purposes.

We acknowledge that the considerably lower than usual number of officials available for these championships has placed considerable pressure on fewer people to deliver the event. We ask that those affected by the error take this in to account.
