Statement on the 2022 FISU World University Games

Published Tue 29 Mar 2022

Athletics Australia has confirmed its decision to withdraw its team from the 2022 FISU World University Games in Chengdu, China to be held from June 26-July 7, 2022.

At this time, Athletics Australia continues to have many concerns around the event and its management of COVID protocols. It is Athletics Australia’s view that it cannot endorse competition for Australian athletes in an environment that could put athletes at risk.

These concerns have been shared by other Australian sporting organisations and international members, who have also decided not to participate in this edition of the event.

Athletics Australia will instead select a World University Games team, recognising athletes with Australian competition kit, and will use the opportunity to support an U23 tour to Europe in June 2022. This team will be selected by invitation.

Athletics Australia General Manager – High Performance, Andrew Faichney said:

“Athletics Australia recognises the importance of the FISU World University Games in an athlete’s progression, however the safety of our athletes was front of mind when we made this decision. Whilst we unfortunately not to attend the Games, we want recognise the achievement of the athletes which is why it is important we still select the team.

“Additionally, we will hold a self-funded invitational tour for Under 23 athletes, to provide an international competition opportunity for this age group. We look forward to returning to the FISU World University Games in 2023.”

The U23 European tour will include a two-week tour of England and Ireland, with one athlete per event group selected by invitation. Priority will go to athletes who are eligible and qualified for the 2022 World University Games and is within the U23 age group. Other athletes may be invited if they are believed to be demonstrating potential at future Olympic Games or World Athletics Championships.
