Success continues on Day 2 of the World University Games

Published Wed 10 Jul 2019

The second day of athletics at the World University Games was deemed a big success as the sun shone bright and made for some very hot and humid conditions in Naples.

Despite the heat of the day, there were two finals that the Australian Team really had to focus on – the Women’s Long Jump and the Men’s 10,000m.

Riley Cocks (Flinders University) and Lachlan Cook (University of Virginia) represented Australia strongly in the Men’s 10,000m; Riley finished 10th in 30:36.67 and Lachlan in 13th in 30:56.66. The winner was Mokofane Milton Kekana from South Africa in 29:29.43.

Both boys agreed that the hot weather played a strong part in the race but Riley was very happy with his overall position considering his year.

I was a bit off my best today but I had an interrupted preparation, so I was very happy to just make the start line and to finish 10th is much more than I had hoped for,” said Riley.

In the Women’s Long Jump final Australia was represented by Jessie Harper (The University of Queensland) & Lizzie Hedding (The University of Melbourne).

Jessie finished in 7th with 6.30m & Lizzie in 8th with 6.29m, the winner was Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk of Ukraine with 6.84m.

Lizzie achieved more than she was expecting and considering her last 12 months the result tonight is brilliant.

“I just really wanted to make the final, I just wanted to give myself the opportunity to jump big, making top 8 tonight, I am really really happy with that, I’ve had a pretty crazy year – in Feb I almost quit the sport but we pushed though it all and to be here for this is just unreal,” said Lizzie.
