ACTIVITIES

PURPOSE

The purpose of Paralympic Pathway Activities are to;

  • Provide opportunities for our Paralympic Pathway athletes to become more involved.
  • Provide opportunities for our Event Group Coaches to identify and consider athletes for inclusion on National Programs/Teams.
  • Provide opportunities for Event Group Coaches to work with personal coaches.

As our Activities are designed and implemented information will be made available here regarding what they are and how to get involved.

If you wish to be informed when the Paralympic Pathway activities are listed, please register your details for our Mailing List (coming soon).

Para-athletes - We want you!

Thank you to all those that participated in our Nationwide Talent Search - we had an overwhelming number of submissions and have had the opportunity to support several athlete/coach connections, a para athletics pathway camp and provide critical information to many developing and aspiring para athletes.

Athletics Australia will use this experience and information gathered through the Talent ID Search to refine our future talent searches and continue to roll out pathway activities.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I access the Activities available to Paralympic Pathway athletes?

Activities will be different for each event group. As these activities are created and planned, we will communicate them to those for whom we feel the opportunity is relevant.

To be considered for activities it is important we have as much information about you and your training, environment and progression. It is important athletes and coaches remain connected with event group coaches and share their training plans and progression. This will help us make effective decision on who to invite to an activity.

Please visit the Paralympic Pathway Activities page for up to date information on current activities.

PERFORMANCE HEALTH PROJECT

In order to perform at their best, athletes need to be fit, healthy, and ready to train and compete. One of the main reasons why athletes can’t train or compete is if they are ill or injured, and research suggests that being unable to complete enough planned training sessions harms performance. Injuries and illnesses also make it harder for athletes to develop towards their potential, and are a leading cause of dropout in developing athletes.

Athletics Australia was recently awarded a Performance Pathways Solution Grant from the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) to conduct a 12-month research study, seeking to better understand the rates of injuries and illnesses in pathway athletes, along with some of the drivers of performance health, such as sleep and stress. The project has received full ethics approval from the AIS and will start in May. The results of this study will then be used to create targeted education materials to developing athletes and coaches, ensuring they can perform at their best as they progress up the pathway.

During the study, recruited athletes will be asked to complete weekly and monthly questionnaires across a variety of injury, illness, and performance health related topics. The weekly questionnaires will take approximately 5 minutes, and the monthly ones slightly longer. We’re hoping to get close to 500 athletes, across both Olympic and Paralympic programs, to take part in the study – so, if you’re interested in being involved, please click the below link to register your interest:
