BIOGRAPHY

Four years after setting the Australian U20 100m record, Jake Doran compiled a perfect 2022 season where he won all the major races, Australian Championship, Brisbane Track Classic and Oceania Championship. At the Nationals he clocked a wind assisted 10.05, before running his best time for four years, 10.19 in Mackay in June.

In June he was named in the Australian team for the Commonwealth Games (100m, 200m and relay) and World Championships (100m). In Eugene he placed sixth in his 100m heat clocking 10.29. Two weeks later at Birmingham he progressed to the 100m semi-final, withdrawing from the 200m. Rested for the heat, unfortunately the 4x100m relay didn’t progress to the final, after the relay anchor tripped and didn’t receive the baton.

It was another strong campaign in 2023 for Jake, third at Nationals and under 10.20 in Japan in May. He also assisted the National team to a quick 38.50 in March.

In August he was named in the 100m for the World Championships, where he placed seventh in his heat in 10.48 seconds.

Jake Doran was a late starter in the sport, aged 14. “I began running track seriously in 2014 when I surprised myself and ran my way from school to the National All Schools Championships in the 100m.”

In late 2016, just weeks after his 16th birthday, he clocked a series of quick sprint marks - slightly wind assisted times of 10.65 and 10.66. It was just an appetiser for a massive breakthrough at the end of the 2016/17 summer when he ran 10.47 in the heats at the junior nationals smashing his previous best of 10.72. Unfortunately, in that race he tore his hamstring ending his summer. However, he was selected for the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas in 2017, where he placed fifth in the 100m final.

After a solid start to the summer of 2017/18, he suffered a stress fracture, and his summer was again cut short. However, in mid-2018 he answered an SOS to fill a vacancy in the Australian team for the 2018 World U20 Championships.
His performances in the leadup to the World U20 Championships in Tampere, were breathtaking. After a good start of 10.69 before he departed Australia in June, in a warmup meet in Finland he ran 10.35 in the heat, then a stunning 10.15 in the final – smashing the Australian U20 record. At the World U20s he ran 10.41 in the heat and 10.47 in the semi.

In September he was selected in the Oceania relay to compete at the Continental Cup in Ostrava, where the relay team comprising Kiwis and Aussies placed third.

In May 2019 he received another Australian singlet as he ran on the National 4x100m relay at the World Relays. However, the next couple of years were hampered by cancelled competitions due to COVID. He ran bests of 10.30 in 2019, 10.24 in 2020 and a windy 10.38 in 2021.

His 2022 campaign was going well, but when the major races arrived, he jumped a notch, nailing a brilliant 10.05 wind assisted 100m at Nationals to take the title. It kicked off a purple patch where in addition to the National title, the next week he won at the Brisbane Track Classic, then at Oceania Championships in June. In Mackay he clocked 10.19, his fastest time for four years. His 200m was also progressing, regularly under 21 seconds.

Mid-year he was confirmed in the Australian team for the World Championships (100m) and Commonwealth Games (100m, 200m and relay).
