Classification for Athletes with an Intellectual Impairment

Are you wanting to get active, meet new people and participate at your local Athletics club or school?

Athletics can help you connect to a range of opportunities where you can be involved in Athletics at your local club as well as participate in mainstream and state competitions. We also have an elite pathway program that offers you the opportunity to represent Australia at the Virtus events, Special Olympics and Paralympics for some classes. 

Intellectual Impairment - (Sport Classes TF20)

Sport Inclusion Australia (SIA) are the national organisation responsible for classifying athletes with an Intellectual Impairment. Athletes wishing to obtain an intellectual impairment classification must complete the following stages of classification. 

NEW ATHLETES WITH AN INTELLECTUAL IMPAIRMENT

Any new athlete with an intellectual impairment must read the Sport Inclusion Australia eligibility notes and then complete the Sport Inclusion Australia Eligibility Form. The form must be completed by the athlete, and also by a certified counselor, or psychologist. The form must be return to mail@siasport.org. Athletes can view the eligible notes and download the application form via the below links.

Special Olympics
We acknowledge that some athletes with an intellectual disability or autism may not fall into one of the above classifications. For these athletes, there are a number of Special Olympic events they may be eligible to compete in.

ATHLETES WISHING TO COMPETE AT VIRTUS EVENTS

Athletes wishing to progress to representing Australia at a Virtus international event or the Paralympics must hold a valid Virtus International Eligibility. Athletes must read through the Virtus Eligibility Notes, Complete the Virtus Application Form and return it to mail@siasport.org. Please use the links below to complete the classification.

STAGE 3 : IPC INTERNATIONAL CLASSIFICATION

Athletes wishing to represent Australian at an IPC event such as, Paralympic Games, IPC World Championships must hold a valid IPC Intellectual Impairment Classification. For more information on obtaining an IPC Classification please click here
