Athletics Australia Awards - 2019 Season Winners

Against an unprecedented backdrop, the 2019 Athletics Australia Awards went ahead last week albeit in a new, virtual format. Hosted by Olympian John Steffensen, the awards celebrated the success of our athletes, coaches and officials throughout the 2019 season.

While we were disappointed not to be able to host our usual live gala evening, the first-ever virtual version of the awards allowed us to stream the event to the entire athletics community.

Athletics Australia would like to congratulate all the 2019 award nominees and award recipients.

Female Able Body Athlete of the Year; Kelsey-Lee Barber

What a 2019 – becoming National and Area Javelin Champion before, with a final throw of 66.56m completing the trifecta with a World title in Doha. Second in the Diamond League Final.

Male Able Body Athlete of the Year; Brandon Starc

After a stellar 2018, Brandon continued his success in 2019; winning the Birmingham Diamond League, finishing second at the Zurich Diamond League and clearing 2.30m three times in the year including when taking the sixth spot in the high jump final in Doha.

Junior Female Athlete of the Year; Bendere Oboya

Won the 400m at the 2019 senior national championship, also taking gold the 400m at the Oceania Championships before displaying her prodigious talent in reaching the semi-finals of the 400m in the senior World Championships.

Junior Male Athlete of the Year; Ashley Moloney

At 19 he is hard to be considered a junior athlete because of the stamp he has already made on the world decathlete stage. In 2019 won the Oceania Championships and finished 13th at the 45th Hypo-Meeting (Gotzis).

Female Para Athlete of the Year; Vanessa Low

Won gold in the T61-63 long jump clearing 4.68 with her fifth jump at the World Para Championships.

Male Para Athlete of the Year; James Turner

In another standout year, James won gold at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai in both the 100m and 400m setting new T36 world records in both events.

Able Coach of the Year; Mike Barber

2019 will be a year to remember for Mike, after coaching Kelsey-Lee Barber to gold at the World Championships and Jayden Sawyer to the World Para Championships.

Junior Coach of the Year; Penny Gillies

Penny finished off the 2019 year by successfully coaching Carley Thomas and Bella O’Grady to World Championships.

Para Coach of the Year; Philo Saunders

Philo had an immense 2019 where he coached Jaryd Clifford, Michael Roeger, Dion Kenzie all to podium finishes at the World Para Championships.

Official of the Year; Zoe Eastwood-Bryson

Zoe was re-appointed to the World Athletics International Race Walk Judges’ Panel and in that capacity officiated at the 2019 Taicang World Walk Challenge and as Chief Walk Judge at the Oceania Championships.
